Students on 2 buses witness crashes on way to local schools
Woman loading child onto bus hit by car; Another driver hits different bus
Students aboard two schools buses had a harrowing morning as they witnessed crashes on their way to school Friday.
The first crash around 7 a.m. on Highway 181 near Max Road involved a woman who, according to Bexar County Sheriff’s investigators, was hit by a car while loading her child onto a school bus.
“The driver of the PT Cruiser, for whatever reason -- we believe (it) might have been driver inattention or (the driver) fell asleep at the wheel -- veered over to the right of the bus and struck the mother,” said Sgt. Kenneth Steward.
The woman, who was struck while standing on the highway shoulder, suffered a possible broken arm and other unknown injuries, Steward said.
“The mother was able to push the child away and the child didn’t get injured,” he said.
No one on the bus was injured either. But Steward said it’s possible some of them may have seen what happened.
A spokeswoman with East Central Independent School District said all of the students, who were headed to various elementary and middle schools, eventually continued on to their way.
She said all of their principals and parents were made aware of the incident.
According to Steward, the bus driver had activated his lights when he stopped.
Other bus rear-ended by car
About an hour after that crash, a North East Independent School district bus was rear-ended by a Ford Mustang on Walzem Road near Midcrown Drive.
That bus was carrying 26 children to Edward H. White Middle School, according to Aubrey Chancellor, spokeswoman for North East ISD.
“None of the children needed to be taken to the hospital. None them was injured, so that was really good news,” Chancellor said. “But we did want to make sure that they were each checked out by our nurses."
Chancellor said all of the students’ parents were notified about the crash.
The Mustang driver was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center with unknown injuries.
San Antonio police officers at the scene said the crash is still under investigation.
