Suspect in deadly chase had prior arrests for running from police
David Rodriguez, suspect in crash that killed Walter Maspero, 3, has history of running from police
David Rodriguez, 30, is facing a charge of capital murder in connection with a crash that killed Walter Maspero, 3, near Interstate 35 and Shepherd Road in Atascosa Wednesday afternoon.
Rodriguez was booked into the Bexar County jail several hours after the 4:30 p.m. crash. His bond is set at $2 million.
According to Sgt. Javier Salazar, spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, officers tried to stop Rodriguez as he left a suspected drug house that detectives had been watching.
Instead of stopping, he said Rodriguez sped away.
Salazar said at one point, Rodriguez made a U-turn on the access road of Interstate 35 near Shepherd Road and tried to ram an officer’s car with his SUV.
Although the officer avoided the collision, Rodriguez’s SUV sideswiped a Volvo station wagon carrying six members of a family, police said.
Walter Maspero, 3, was killed in the crash. Three other children and two adults suffered serious injuries.
People who witnessed the crash said the family lives in the area and may have been headed home at the time.
Records show Rodriguez has a history of arrests on charges that include marijuana possession, marijuana delivery and evading arrest.
