SAN ANTONIO -

A search for a suspect in a smash-and-grab style burglary at a Valero store had San Antonio police officers out in force in a North Side neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

An officer at the scene said a man in his 20s used a sport utility vehicle to smash into the front glass doors of a Valero store in the 1100 block of Fresno shortly before 4 a.m. The man then got out, grabbed beer and snacks and drove off.

In the process of smashing the doors, the man apparently broke out the tail lights on the vehicle, the officer said.  Police later spotted the Ford Expedition in the area and began chasing it.

The driver pulled onto a dead-end street near San Pedro and Hildebrand avenues, jumped out of the vehicle and ran away, the officer said.

Police searched the area using a helicopter, dogs and officers on the ground but did not find the suspect. He was last seen wearing khaki shorts and a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, police said.
