The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office is still working to identify a man who died after being hit by a pickup on Interstate 37, south of downtown San Antonio, Monday morning.
San Antonio police found his body in the back of a pickup on I-37 South near Carolina Street around 5 a.m.
They soon realized his death was connected to a crash that had happened moments before on the opposite side of the highway, according to Lt. Carlos Garcia with SAPD.
Garcia said the man who was killed was driving a stolen SUV that had crashed into the median on I-37 North.
He said the suspect was trying to run away when he was killed.
"For whatever reason, he decided to cross the median. And as soon as he crossed, right when he got to the middle lane, another vehicle hit him," Garcia said.
The impact sent the man flying, and shattered the windshield of the pickup.
"He hit the side of the car, then hit the window and wound up in the back of the pickup," Garcia said.
The driver who hit the suspect stopped and gave police his information. It was not immediately clear if he would be cited.
The incident caused traffic tie-ups on both sides of the highway.
The southbound lanes of I-37 near Carolina Street were closed for nearly two hours.
