SAN ANTONIO -

A man who was struck and killed by a pickup on Interstate 37 South near Carolina Street was running from another crash at the time, according to San Antonio police.

The man, believed to be in his teens or early 20s, had been driving a suspected stolen car when it hit a guardrail on the north side of I-37 around 5 a.m. Monday, police said.

“For some unknown reason, he got out and ran across the highway,” said Lt. Carlos Garcia. “That’s when he was hit by the pickup.”

Garcia said the man was hit the side of the truck at first, then slammed into the windshield, rolled over the top and landed in the bed of the pickup.

He died at the scene. Police did not immediately release his name.

Due to the accident, southbound traffic was diverted off the highway at Carolina Street. The highway reopened shortly before 7 a.m.

A separate rollover crash around the same time had traffic backed up on the north side of I-37.
