TXDOT project promises to ease I-35 congestion
Additional lanes proposed
There may be some relief coming to the traffic on Interstate 35, but it may take a while.
The Texas Department of Transportation is looking to ease that congestion by focusing on IH 35 from IH 410 South to IH 410 North. TXDOT is proposing two additional lanes to Interstate, they are also looking at reconfiguring ramps and adding auxiliary lanes.
The proposed area would be from George Beach Avenue to Thousand Oaks.
"The big one is moving the 35 Southbound ramp to 410 Southbound from the left side to the right side," said Laura Lopez, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation.
Susan Oaks, who said she travels 35 all the time, came out to TXDOT's open house Thursday to learn more about the project.
"I travel all over the city and various locations," said Oaks. "But, I use 35 South a lot."
Oaks admitted Thursday that she is looking forward to the improvements, but she said she is dreading what her commute will look like during construction.
"Once they do this, this construction, it's going to be much better," said Oaks. "What I'm a little concerned about is during the construction."
Lopez said that construction should start late next year.
"As we start construction, it does get a little hairy," said Lopez. "Unfortunately that's part of the process. There are going to be lane closures. We are going to effect traffic. However, you got to look at the end result."
Lopez said TXDOT is planning on holding a public hearing on the project sometime this summer.
