New Mexico (1-0) at No. 17 Texas (1-0), 8 p.m. (Longhorn Network)
Line: Texas by 38
Series Record: Texas leads 2-0.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
Texas is looking for another big win to keep boosting quarterback David Ash's confidence. Ash was solid in the first game but needs to taste more victories before the Big 12 schedule starts. New Mexico has already accomplished last season's win total under first-year head coach Bob Davie. The Lobos may want to just get out of Austin without injuries.
KEY MATCHUP
New Mexico freshman QB Cole Gautsche vs. Texas LB Jordan Hicks. Gautsche directs New Mexico's option offense, which will challenge Hicks and the Texas linebackers to be disciplined on their reads. But even if the Longhorns get fooled on misdirection plays, they should have the speed to cover from sideline to sideline. Gautsche had a 47-yard touchdown run last week against Southern. Hicks led the Longhorns with six solo tackles against Wyoming.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New Mexico: KR Chase Clayton had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week. He'll face much tougher kick coverage against Texas, which pinned Wyoming inside the 20 four times last week.
Texas: WR Mike Davis needs a breakout game. The Longhorns are still waiting for the junior to become their deep threat. Ash underthrew him twice last week, but if that tandem can get the Longhorns going vertical, it will add a big dimension to the offense.
