Third child dies in suspected DWI crash
1 other children hurt; Driver charged with intox. manslaughter, assault
A third child has died in a suspected DWI crash early Monday morning on the West Side.
San Antonio police said a 31-year-old woman riding in the car was also killed. Another child was also injured in the crash and was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
"Any time there's an accident involving a fatality, it's certainly a tragic situation. Even more so when it's children involved," SAPD Sergeant Javier Salazar said.
The driver, identified as Larry Demers, 35, suffered minor injuries and is suspected of driving while intoxicated, police said.
Officers responded to the crash just after midnight in the 6300 block of Medina Base Road.
"It appears that speed was a factor. The driver of the vehicle reportedly lost control. left the roadway and then struck a bulldozer that was parked on the side of the road," Salazar said.
Police said the driver was headed west bound toward Loop 410 when he crashed a construction zone. Investigators believe he was driving faster than the 35 mph posted speed limit.
Demers is expected to be charged with four counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.
Investigators are trying to determine if Demers, the woman and the four children are all one family, but said Demers is not cooperating with police.
Demers' criminal history shows he has been charged with drug possession and theft, but it appears this was his first drunken driving-related offense.
So far this year, 57 people have died on San Antonio roads in traffic accidents.
