GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — Jury selection has started in Galveston in the capital murder trial of a southeast Texas man charged with killing a 79-year-old woman during a shooting spree last year outside the Jefferson County courthouse.
Bartholomew Granger faces a possible death sentence for the slaying of Minnie Sebolt. Granger's ex-wife and daughter also were among several other people shot and wounded in the March 2012 gunfire in downtown Beaumont.
Authorities say the 42-year-old Granger was trying to kill relatives in retaliation for testifying against him at his sexual assault trial. Sebolt, not related to him, was caught in the gunfire.
Beaumont television station KFDM reports (http://bit.ly/XbqYnM) state District Judge Bob Wortham told about 200 potential jurors Tuesday the selection process likely would take a couple weeks. The trial was moved from Beaumont.
