Two-alarm fire forces downtown hotel evacuation
Firefighters say guests had moved into rooms just before fire began burning
A two-alarm fire burned through a downtown hotel Friday night and forced guests to evacuate.
The fire started just after 10:30 p.m. at the Travelodge in the 400 block of Broadway.
Flames gushed from a third story window when first fire crews rolled up.
They immediately called for a second alarm.
Hotel guests evacuated as firefighters worked to get the flames out.
Crews took about 15 minutes to bring the fire under control, then spent another hour dealing with thick smoke inside the hotel.
They say the rooms where the fire started were occupied by two families.
Those families had come to San Antonio to attend the Army All-America football game.
Firefighters say the families had just checked into the hotel, and then left their rooms to visit the River Walk.
Fire crews say the fire, smoke and water damaged 4 to 6 rooms.
Investigators were trying to determine what started the fire.
