U.S. Border Patrol agents say they have seized more than $7.5 million worth of marijuana since the beginning of 2013.
Agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station said they made the largest confiscation Sunday near Garceno after they spotted a pickup truck traveling away from the Rio Grande at a high rate of speed.
Once the driver of the vehicle saw additional agents who were called into assist, agents said the man jumped out and attempted to flee into the nearby brush. They said they were able to catch up with the driver and arrested him.
Inside the vehicle, agents said they found more than 1,100 pounds of marijuana.
Authorities said another large seizure was also made near Garceno early Saturday morning. Agents said they saw bundles of marijuana in the backseat of a car on Old Business Highway 83.
As agents attempted to stop the car, agents said the driver headed south for about 100 yards. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Agents said inside the car was more than 900 pounds of marijuana.
Authorities said several additional seizures were made, which pushed the total amount of marijuana confiscated to more than 9,400 pounds.
