UTSA extends Alamodome agreement
Roadrunners, the 'Dome together until 2035
The city of San Antonio and the University of Texas-San Antonio have extended their agreement that allows the Roadrunners football team to continue playing in the Alamodome until 2035.
The City Council approved the extension of the current agreement during their Thursday session.
"We are very excited," said Lynn Hickey, UTSA athletic director.
The details of the agreement carry over other than a few minor changes.
Some of those changes include an out for both sides every five years, allowing the school 10 more luxury suits to sell.
Now that there is a long-term deal in place, the city and school can work together to bring in more fans and make the experience that much better for visitors and hometown fans alike.
"We can work together on this and really get the crowds in (and work at) how (we can) better utilize the River Walk and the hotels, so this is a win-win," Hickey said.
"It’s a boom for the economy downtown and, really, San Antonio has a whole," said District 7 Councilman Cris Medina.
Businesses around the 'Dome are looking forward to the certainty of a schedule for decades to come.
"The Alamodome is going to have more money, restaurants downtown (and) bars downtown are going to have more money," said Francisco Gonzalez, who works at Aldaco’s restaurant.
The school will be doing its part to sell San Antonio, bringing in some top-notch teams, recruits and fans.
“What we found was that people wanted to come to San Antonio. It’s a destination city,” Hickey said.
