Union Chief: Officers accused in cover-up will be cleared
The San Antonio Police Officers Association president said he expects all six SAPD officers under investigation for their handling of a call involving an off-duty sergeant to be cleared of any alleged improprieties.
San Antonio Police Officers Association President Mike Helle has spoken with all six responding officers and said they're taking this investigation very hard.
"These guys, every single one of them, feels like they've been gut-kicked," said Helle. "I've worked with almost every single one of them in my career of 22 years and their integrity and ... what they feel about their job is paramount to them and they feel like they've not only let themselves down but the public down."
Helle said the officers followed protocol when they responded to a disturbance call at North St. Mary's and Mulberry last Thursday morning and found Sergeant Joseph Myers knocking on truck windows looking for his vehicle.
"We don't know at this point why he was out there so early in the morning or what was going on with him, but it's been described to me as he was kind of acting bizarre and that's the best way I can describe it," he said.
Myers' truck was later found wrecked on Highway 281 North near Josephine.
Because officers could not place Myers behind the wheel of the truck, nor found any witnesses who could, there's no case for DWI charges.
"He was as close as me to you and they didn't smell alcohol on him but his behavior was bizarre and that's really what the department is trying to wrap their head around, what constituted that behavior?" said Helle.
Myers, who takes 14 different medications, did provide breath, blood and urine samples that morning but results have not been reported.
Helle said Myers, a 21-year SAPD veteran, has not filed for retirement despite earlier reports.
Myers remains on administrative leave while the six responding officers are on administrative duty while the investigation continues.
