With broken windows and graffiti all over its exterior, the Hedrick Building has been vacant for well over a decade.
Located at the corner of Martin and N. St. Mary’s, the multi-story structure is considered an eyesore by many.
“It's a 10-story display of graffiti and things that don't need to be here anymore,” said local architect and San Antonio resident Jeff Reininger. “I think it's served its purpose, seen its time, and it's time for it to move on.”
But according to the city’s Development Services Department, the only requirement for such buildings is that they are structurally safe and secure, and it’s not illegal to own a building that is aesthetically unappealing.
“It may not look really good, but it's structurally sound so that people walking around that structure can feel safe and its structurally okay,” said Michael Shannon with the city’s Development Services Department. “Right now, it's really just the safety of the structure, keep it clean and secure and structurally sound.”
Shannon said there were previously some code compliance issues with the building, but all had been corrected by the owner, B.P. Agrawal, of RBRA Inc.
According to the Bexar County Appraisal District, the property is assessed at $226,000 for 2012, with property taxes at $6,085.98.
Phone calls and emails to Agrawal to ask him about his plans for the property, were not returned.
