Vandals blamed for major sewage spill
SAWS says rocks dropped into line caused sewage mess
A major sewage spill on the city's Northeast side kept crews busy late Friday night.
It happened off of Old Seguin, right off of Ackerman Road.
SAWS officials believe the spill is the result of vandalism and that crews will spend the next few days trying to clean it up and repair it.
Saws officials say its not clear when the vandalism occurred. They said because it happened in a remote area, they could not tell if it happened a few days ago or even a week ago.
However, they do believe that someone tore the manhole cover off the sewer and dropped large rocks down into the sewage pipe.
That caused the sewage to back up and spill.
SAWS says the spill is large, more than 100,000 gallons, and that it is in the Rittiman Creek basin along the creek.
A SAWS spokeswoman said spills caused by vandalism are rare and the last one they had was a couple of years ago in the Bitters Road area.
