Visitation held for mother, twins killed in SW Bexar County fire
Woman, 14-month-old sons died in house fire Feb. 25
A public visitation was held Tuesday evening at Beacon Hill Baptist Church for a young mother and her 14-month-old twin boys.
Roxanne Moreno, 31, and her sons, Orlin and Daniel, were killed Feb. 25 when their house caught fire on the 8100 block of Old Pearsall Road.
“She had made it out and went back in for her children,” said Moreno’s cousin, Debbie Fonseca, at the memorial. “And that’s just the kind of person she was that she put her children first. That's why they’re in there together.”
Friends and family had to wait weeks to finally gather to say their goodbyes. Officials kept custody of the three bodies during the investigation into what caused the fatal fire.
That waiting period was especially painful, the family says, for Moreno’s mother.
"The agony was unbearable. The frustration was immense,” Fonseca said. “And I can’t express to you the exhilaration in her voice when she spoke to me and finally said her babies were coming home.”
"There wasn’t a day or a week that went by that we didn’t call and ask, ‘When are you going to release them?’” said Moreno’s cousin, David Prouty.
Even a month later, investigators say the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
"It doesn’t change the fact that they’re not here anymore. Only God knows what happened. And they’ve taken solace in knowing that God knows the truth,” said Fonseca.
Moreno and her sons will be buried Wednesday in a purple casket, Moreno’s favorite color. Purple balloons will also be released during the burial.
Prouty says the private and public visitations and the burial have been made possible entirely through donations from the community made during fundraisers over the last month.
The family did not have life insurance.
