Walmart to offer earlier holiday layaway plan
Corsair ceiling fans, PBteen beadboad bunk beds, Toysmith animal snap bracelets recalled
While back-to-school shopping isn't quite in the bag yet, Walmart announced it's bringing holiday layaway back earlier this year.
The program will begin Sept. 14, giving customers three months to pay off their holiday gifts.
The list of items available for layaway is also expanding beyond toys, electronics and jewelry to include some small appliances and sporting goods.
There are rules to layaway. Walmart will require each item cost at least $15 and the total layaway must be at least $50. A down payment of $10 or 10 percent, whichever is greater, will be required. Customers will pay $15 to open a layaway account. That will be refunded in the form of Walmart gift card when the balance is paid of on time.
Layaway made a comeback with many merchants last year to help boost sales and to help customers who do not have access to credit.
Ceiling fans, bunk beds, bracelets recalled
Emerson Air Comfort Products recalled "Corsair" model ceiling fans. The fan's hanger bracket can spread, causing the fan to fall from the ceiling.
The fans were sold from January 2009 through June 2012. Consumer should contact Emerson to schedule a free repair.
PBteen recalled beadboad bunk beds after 13 reports of cracked panels. The upper front horizontal panel can crack or break, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Consumers are urged to stop using the upper bunk and contact PBteen for a free replacement panel.
Toysmith recalled nearly 90,000 animal snap bracelets after eight reports of lacerations.
The metal snap band can wear through the fabric covering, and sharp edges can cut.
Retailers sold the bracelets from September 2011 to February 2012 or $3. Consumers should return them to the store for a full refund.
