Woman accused of stealing student's backpack from UTSA restroom, selling it for $10
Halona Claunch tracked down at Haven for Hope, charged with theft
Halona Claunch, 42, is accused of stealing the backpack of a student who had stopped to use a restroom at the downtown UTSA campus.
The victim told police she left her backpack, which contained a laptop computer, on the bathroom counter while she stepped into a stall on Nov. 13, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. However, when she came out, the backpack was gone.
The affidavit stated a friend of the victim who was standing outside at the time reported seeing a woman exit the restroom with what appeared to be something under her jacket.
While UTSA police spoke with the victim, the friend went searching for the thief, the affidavit stated.
She later found a different woman with the backpack, and that woman told police she bought it for $10 from someone matching the suspect’s description, the affidavit stated.
Police said they were not able to recover any of the items that had been inside.
About a week later, investigators met with security personnel at Haven for Hope and showed them surveillance pictures of the suspect.
They said the employees were able to identify Claunch by name, the affidavit stated. She was arrested Monday on a charge of theft.
