Jessica Mercado, 23, is accused of snatching another woman’s purse from the conveyor belt of an X-ray machine at the Bexar County Courthouse.

Mercado was taken into custody Wednesday on a charge of theft.

Bexar County sheriff’s detectives said a woman who went through a security checkpoint at the courthouse on Feb. 14 walked away, leaving her purse, which contained $2,700 in cash, on the conveyor belt of the X-ray screening machine.

Detectives said they reviewed surveillance video and it clearly shows another woman walk up behind her, pick up the purse and then exit the courthouse.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, detectives stopped Mercado as she entered the courthouse the following day and asked to speak with her.

The affidavit stated that investigators believed Mercado was the woman in the video.

They said, during questioning, she admitted to being at the courthouse on the day of the theft, but denied taking the purse.

Detectives also interviewed Mercado’s fiancé who was with her both days, and his story corroborated what can be seen in the video, the affidavit stated.

Investigators, however, said they do not believe the fiancé was involved in the theft.
