A San Antonio woman has filed a lawsuit against VIA Metropolitan Transit following an accident at a bus transfer station last fall.
Oralia Chavira, 65, was run over by a bus as she attempted to walk across a crosswalk while changing buses at the transit company’s transfer station on Northwestern Street.
“I looked up and the bus was right in my face,” Chavira said.
She said she was walking with a cane and had no chance to avoid being run over.
“I raised up my hand to see if the bus driver could see me and the next thing I knew the tires were right on my feet,” she said.
Chavira said the driver, who has since been disciplined, according to a VIA spokesman, approached her as she was being placed in an ambulance.
“The bus driver came running to me and held my hand, (and) said, ‘I’m sorry, ma'am, I didn’t see you,'” Chavira said.
Chavira was hospitalized for 83 days following the Nov. 3, 2012, accident and has had 12 surgeries.
Her legs and feet were severely mangled and she lost her right heel.
The VIA spokesman said the transit company will have no comment on the case until they have had an opportunity to review the lawsuit.
