Woodlawn Christian Church tenant told to pay or leave
Judge rules overdue rent, attorneys fees must be paid
A Bexar County justice of the peace has ruled that a group representing itself as a LULAC Council No. 4994 must pay back rent to the Woodlawn Christian Church.
The group has been using office space at the church since last spring.
The church is presently closed while the members try to resolve an ownership lawsuit. That matter is pending in another court.
The vice chairman of the board of Woodlawn Christian Church, Steve Kennedy, claims that Steve Huerta, of LULAC Council No. 4994, owes more than $7,000 in back rent.
“Mr. Huerta doesn’t want to pay his rent,” Kennedy said, following Monday’s hearing before Peace Justice Monica Caballero. “He wants to live there for free.”
Huerta claims the rent has been paid but could not produce receipts.
He blames the confusion on the division within the church.
“LULAC No. 4994 has paid these rents,” Huerta said. “The dispute of the accounts in another court has caused this problem.”
Following a three-hour hearing, Caballero gave Huerta five days to either pay the back rent and attorney’s fees or vacate the property.
Huerta said he plans to appeal Monday’s ruling.
