4 Horseman burger at Chunky's a caustic challenge
Chunky’s Burgers looks just like any normal San Antonio burger joint.
Their regular burgers are very tasty, but what attracts some people is the equivalent of a burger Mount Everest.
John Porter tackled a burger -- the Four Horseman -- known as one of the hottest in the world.
"I was good until I got here, and now I'm starting to kind of get nervous," said Porter.
The Four Horseman burger is a patty that includes jalapeno, serrano, Ghost powder from India, and habanero sauce.
You might think nobody would order this caustic combination, but you would be wrong.
Connie Martinez is the manager at Chunky’s.
"It’s a thrill. People want to do it. Macho guys want to come and say, 'Oh yeah, I did this burger,' and they're usually the ones crying on the floor," says Martinez.
Invented three years ago, the “Horseman” has been wreaking havoc ever since.
The ghost pepper is just part of what makes the horse kick.
Just the fumes from when it was on the grill made the cooks at Chunky’s cover it up.
Joe Sandoval and Porter took the Four Horseman Challenge. Sandoval lasted three bites.
"I thought it was going to be like a jalapeno (It's) liquid fire," says Sandoval.
Porter, an author who writes under the name James Venom, started and stopped but finished the whole thing.
"I thought it was going to be hot for a little bit, and then kind of go away, but this sucker's just sticking to you," says Porter.
So would he try the Four Horsemen again?
“No," he said.
The prize for finishing it is bragging rights. You get the $20 burger for free, but the glory of being one of the few to finish is priceless.
“I’m glad I did it,” says Porter.
