SAN ANTONIO -

San Antonio police stopped an 80-year-old man who they said became disoriented and drove the wrong way on Interstate 35 near downtown.

Officers said the man told them he was on his way back home Friday morning to Oklahoma City after having dental work done in Mexico.

Officers said the driver apparently had exited the highway to go to a gas station near Southcross Road, then got back on the highway going north in the southbound lanes.

Police received the call about the wrong way driver shortly before 4 a.m. By the time they caught up with him, he had traveled nearly six miles.

They stopped the senior citizen at the South Laredo Street exit, police said.

The driver was brought to the police department’s central substation on North Frio Street and his pickup was impounded.

Officers said they decided not to arrest the man, but instead took him to a motel.

They said they planned to call his family in Oklahoma to come and pick him up.
