A San Antonio mother was arrested on Wednesday after leaving five children alone in motel room in the 9400 block of Wurzbach.
San Antonio Police found the children after one of them accidentally called 911 while playing with the phone.
Elizabeth Ruth Medina, 29, was arrested after she returned to the motel, and will be charged with five counts of abandoning a child.
While Medina was taken into police custody, four of the children were taken to a local children’s shelter, while Child Protective Services is working to determine where they will go from here.
“We're going to be looking at whether or not someone is able to care for those children, whether those children have been cared for, or any children in a situation like this,” said Mary Walker, spokeswoman for Child Protective Services. “We're going to be looking at whether there's anyone appropriate, any relatives or any kinship who might be able to take these children and care for them. That's going to be a process."
According to Walker, the process involves vetting a potential caretaker by getting a criminal background check, and looking at that person’s living conditions and environment.
If a suitable caretaker is not found, Child Protective Services may ask a judge for custody of the children.
“We want to know those things, and we want to make sure that if there is someone, who can take care of them, that they're going to be able to provide for whatever these children need,” Walker said. “And that very well mean, that they have to come into our care."
According to police, the children, who range in age from 9 months old to 6 years old, were infected with lice and scabies.
The youngest child, a 9-month old infant girl, is currently in the hospital.
