After latest East Side shooting victim's father wants community to 'step up'

Jovance Gonzales, 26, shot, killed while riding bike

SAN ANTONIO – A man was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting late Friday morning on the city's East Side.

The victim was identified by family members as Javance Gonzalez, 26.

"I'm tired of this," said Joe Gonzalez, the victim’s father.

The shooting was reported around 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Lone Oak and Dorie.

Police said Jovance Gonzalez was riding his bicycle, when a silver vehicle pulled up and shot him. Gonzalez died on the scene.

"You take my son, my son. The Lord’s going to take care of this. I guarantee you that," said Joe Gonzalez.

Chief William McManus voiced his frustration over the violence in the area.

"We have made a lot of arrests in the area for crimes of violence. Unfortunately, there are some still out here who are not getting the message," McManus said. "We are going to further our efforts with the community and a couple of other ideas that we have on how to deal with this. But right now, arresting the problem away hasn't worked."

No motive has been established for the shooting. Joe Gonzalez wants the community to also step and do their part.

"We got to have one person open up their mouth on these crimes. These cops can't do it by themselves. They got to open up their damn mouth," he said.

The incident is the third shooting on the city’s East Side in the past 24 hours.
