SAN ANTONIO -

A 39-year-old man is accused of beating and robbing a cabbie after a dispute about the route the driver was taking, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The affidavit stated that Raul Ortega, III, was one of several passengers in the cab on Jan. 23.

The affidavit stated that the driver told San Antonio police Ortega began complaining about the route he was taking in driving them to their destination, accusing him of purposely going out of the way to increase the fare.

The driver told police Ortega became irate and began assaulting him as he tried to exit a highway.

The affidavit stated that the other passengers then joined in the assault, and after the driver ran away, one person chased him down and took his cellphone.

The driver said the group ran off after he told them he had called police. He told officers who arrived that they had also stolen his car keys and ID card.

Police said the attack was caught on camera inside the cab. They said the driver later identified Ortega during a photo lineup, the affidavit stated. Ortega was arrested Thursday on a charge of robbery.
