A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the fatal drive-by shooting of 13-year-old Gabriel Martinez.
Police said the suspect was already jailed at the Frank Tejeda Juvenile Detention Center on an unrelated charge of robbery.
The mother of Gabriel Martinez, Abby Garcia, said she is one step closer in finding closure with her son’s death. Not only by remembering the beautiful memories he left behind, but also because a 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the drive by shooting that killed her son back in Sept. 2013.
“Put the age to the side he's a young kid just like my son but what he did to my son, he took me away, he took my son's life away, my son could have become something big, " said Garcia.
Gabriel, was in the front yard of his South Side home in the 300 block of Palfrey, at 3 a.m., when someone in a black SUV or pickup opened fire, police said.
Gabriel was shot twice in the chest and died at the scene. His mother said Gabriel was in the 7th grade and an honor roll student at Rogers Middle School. The holidays were especially difficult without her son who was always so happy and smiling.
“I mean we found him, we found the shooters now we need to get justice and I need all the prayers , we need justice for my son ," said Garcia.
The family plans on holding a vigil for Gabriel later this week.
