Attempted child abduction reported on city's North Side

Police asking parents to talk to children about the dangers

SAN ANTONIO – Northeast ISD officials sent a letter out on Thursday warning parents about a child who was nearly abducted.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon near Larkspur Elementary School.

According to a letter, sent out to parents on Thursday, a man drove up to a student walking from school, near Larkspur Drive, and tried to grab that child.

The child got away, and now Northeast ISD's police alongside San Antonio police are investigating the report and reminding children of the importance of being careful and aware of their surroundings.

"Take that opportunity to have that conversation with your child," said Douglas Greene with the San Antonio Police Department. "If at all possible, go online and show them some of these stories that are being done where people are actually trying to abduct children."

Northeast ISD officials released these safety topics to parents in the letter:

  • Stay with a group when walking to and/or from home.
  • Stay on the main road; do not take shortcuts.
  • Be cautious of adults asking for help.
  • If approached by a person offering rides, walk away.
  • Never get in a car with anyone you don’t know.
  • If walking home and you have a problem, come back to school and we will call your parents.
  • Know where to go for help.
  • Report any suspicious people or activities to a trusted adult.
  • If your child has a cell phone, instruct them on whom to call for help.

"It brings it more to reality. It shows your child that these things do indeed happen," Greene said.

School officials told parents the man who tried to grab the child was in a dark Nissan Altima with paper plates. He has a dark complexion, believed to be in his mid to late 30s, is overweight and has dark hair and a beard.
