A 50-year-old woman is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the bank account of a woman who hired her to sell real estate.
Veronica Del Hierro was arrested and booked into the Bexar County Jail Thursday on charges of theft from the elderly and exploitation of the elderly.
An arrest warrant affidavit stated that a 75-year-old woman who lives in Mexico told San Antonio police she hired Del Hierro to sell some property in San Antonio for her.
Instead, police said Del Hierro took advantage of her. The affidavit stated that Del Hierro took an envelope containing a Frost Bank debit card from a mailbox at one of the older woman’s homes.
It stated she then used the woman’s debit card as identification and cashed several checks on her bank account, totaling more than $18,000.
On one occasion in August, though, a check was declined, the affidavit stated.
The bank manager told police he suspected that something wasn’t right about the situation so he followed Del Hierro out of the bank and wrote down her license plate number, the affidavit stated.
He also told police he had made several prior attempts to reach the woman in Mexico but was unsuccessful.
When detectives spoke with the woman, she confirmed that the checks had been cashed without her permission, the affidavit stated,
Police said they obtained surveillance video from the bank and confirmed that the woman making those transactions was Del Hierro.
