Two days after being found covered in blood from multiple stab wounds outside her far Westside duplex, those closest to 43-year-old Eleanor Rodriguez Gonzales staged a benefit to help with her funeral expenses.

"These are the people who loved her, her family and friends," said Sandra Mireles, one of the event organizers at Rick's MVP Sports Bar on Nogalitos.

Mireles said her best friend was loving and compassionate, so everyone who knew Gonzales is at a loss as to why she was killed and who her attacker may have been.

According to SAPD, blood was visible inside the ransacked duplex where the victim had lived alone.

At the scene last Friday, Police Chief William McManus said he was "cautiously optimistic" an arrest would come sooner rather than later, but it was not a random attack.

Mireles said she hoped police get the break they need to make a quick arrest. She said Gonzales, the mother of three grown children with a young grandson, was "a strong, independent woman."

"We just can't believe this would happen to her or who would do something like this to her," said Mireles.
