Better Business Bureau offers tips to consumers looking to purchase vehicles

SAN ANTONIO – The Better Business Bureau has some tips for people who are looking to buy a car soon. The agency advises consumers to do their research and make informed decisions.

According to the bureau, the average price of a car in the U.S. is about $30,000. It comes in second to home buying as the most expensive purchase people make.

Many auto companies release their new models between September and December every year. However, companies have the option to make new releases at any time.

Starting next month, auto makers will start releasing their new models and promote savings on previous year models.

The bureau said auto dealers were the top 10 most complained and inquired about business categories. Consumers complained about problems with repairs, customer service and advertising.

The Better Business Bureau has these tips for consumers who plan to buy a vehicle.

  • Buyers should do their research and shop around to find the best prices available. People can find trustworthy auto dealers by visiting BBB.org.

  • The bureau advises buyers to try out vehicles they’re interested in. Visit several lots and compare cars you’re interested in purchasing. Negotiate pricing with the dealer to score the best deal.

  • Consider the terms of financing a vehicle to make what fits your budget. The bureau said some dealers may offer low financing rates, but may not be willing to negotiate sticker price.

  • Understand how trade-ins work. People should find out how much their vehicle is worth prior to trading it in. Visit the National Automobile Dealers Association’s (NADA) to compare cars.
