Wolff 'very disturbed' by Romo being placed on administrative leave

UTSA president on leave for investigation into conduct

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said Wednesday he is “very disturbed” about University of Texas at San Antonio President Dr. Ricardo Romo being placed on administrative leave.

Wolff called Romo the best president the university has ever seen, citing his stellar record.

In a surprising move Tuesday, Romo was put on leave for allegations tied to his conduct.

No one has confirmed what exactly that conduct entailed.

The move comes six months before Romo’s scheduled retirement.

Romo should have been treated more fairly, Wolff said.

"It just seems like a very harsh way that he was treated right near the end of his term,” Wolff said. “And (there) could have been a better way to handle it, I think, in the initial phases. But again, we'll have to wait and see where it goes.”

Dr. Pedro Reyes is currently serving as university president.

In a statement, the university said it remains on track to find Romo’s permanent replacement by Sept. 1.
