Thanks to Christian Senior Services and their Meals on Wheels program, 91-year-old Doris Santee -- like thousands of other San Antonio seniors -- gets food from them five days a week.
"I'm glad that I have this, this system is just wonderful," she said. "Without that, I just couldn't exist. I wouldn't be here in my home."
And during these hot summer months, not only are drivers delivering meals, but doing much-needed wellness checks.
“To know that for a lot of these people who are really shut-ins, my visit is really the highlight ... of their day," said Scott Avery, a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Scott Avery has been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for the past eight years. He said making sure his elderly clients' environment is safe and cool is a must during these times when temperatures climb into the triple digits.
"If I sense anything that is potentially wrong, I report it immediately," said Avery.
Just in San Antonio alone, Meals on Wheels delivers 3,700 meals a day -- and 950,000 a year.
Volunteers are always needed to make sure seniors who can use this service are taken care of.
Avery says he works 60 hours a week, and delivering meals takes only about an hour and a half out of his work-day. He said it’s time well spent on folks who not only appreciate the food being delivered to their homes, but the camaraderie that comes with it.
"It's a blessing for me to know that I can stop and visit a number of people, engage with them (and) not just share a meal with them but find out how they're really doing," said Avery.
"I look forward to it and the people who volunteer to do this," Santee said. "They're going to be very blessed."
Right now, there is a waiting list of more than 50 seniors who still need meals delivered to them in Bexar County.
