SAN ANTONIO -

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that a man in custody who was found unresponsive in the Bexar County Jail committed suicide.

The cause of death for Nathaniel Gamez, 25, was determined to be asphyxia by hanging, according to the medical examiner.

A correctional officer reportedly found Gamez unresponsive Friday evening about a half-hour after he appeared to be fine.

The officer called medical staff and paramedics, but they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Jail officials said Gamez was being held in segregation away from the jail's general population.

Gamez had an extensive criminal history including drug and assault convictions. He had just been booked back into the jail for an alleged assault on a family member.
