Boy, 12, leads police on wild chase
Boy flees with dad’s car, several-mile ride ends with crash
A 12-year-old boy who police say had an argument with his father fled in his father’s car, crashing into two cars as he drove away from their apartment complex in the 5700 block of North Knoll Thursday evening.
A security guard at the apartment complex followed the boy and notified police.
The boy was stopped a few miles away but not before he crashed into two other cars.
“The officer got out of the vehicle and the suspect put his car into reverse and rammed the empty patrol car before fleeing the location again,” said San Antonio police spokesman Sgt. Javier Salazar.
Salazar said the officer notified other officers who spotted the youngster and followed him.
“At this point, I don’t think it’s classified as a pursuit,” Salazar said. “I think that the officers were clearly trying to monitor where he was.”
They followed the boy as he travelled east on Huebner Road.
Salazar said, “A short while later, we did receive a second call that the suspect vehicle had rammed another vehicle and the driver fled again on foot and a bystander tackled the suspect and held him until officers arrived.”
The youngster was taken into custody and appeared before Juvenile Court Judge Lisa Jarrett on Friday to face criminal mischief charge.
Jarrett ordered that he remain in custody until his next detention hearing next Thursday.
