Boy, 3, dies after TV falls on him
Police: Boy climbed up dresser, TV topples over
A North Side family in shock and disbelief after their 3-year-old is crushed by a television set.
The accident happened on Wednesday night at the child's home in the 5300 block of Vista Glen.
The child, Elias Rodriguez, 3, was airlifted to University Hospital, where he died about an hour later.
Clara Mejia said she still can't believe that Rodriguez, who is her sister's only child, is gone.
"They called me when I was on my way home," said Mejia. "And I just couldn't believe it. I think we still cannot believe it."
According to the police report, the drawers to a dresser were open -- as if the child climbed on the dresser to a press a button on the television.
But police say that's what caused the TV and the dresser to come down.
"This could happen to anybody," said Mejia. "In a split-second ... he's gone. You turn around, you're taking care of him, you're doing everything you can as a family, you turn around and he's gone."
Police said the TV fell directly on the child's head and are ruling the death, an accident.
However, Mejia said it's little comfort to her sister and the rest of the family, devastated by the loss.
"He was a very lovable boy," she said. "A very active boy, as is everybody's child. It could have been anybody's child."
Funeral arrangements are pending.
