A teenage boy is in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. The shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. Sunday at a Houston apartment complex.
Lataz Mattox said he and his friends were playing basketball at the apartments when three people he had never seen before walked up and started a fight.
Mattox said his little brother, 13-year-old Elijah Williams, was not involved with the fight, but tried to stop his big brother from getting seriously beaten.
"He was trying to protect his brother, trying to protect me, trying to help me out," Mattox said. "I was on the ground and they say my brother came around the car and they said he tried to help me."
Police said during the scuffle, one suspect handed a gun to his friend, who then fired into the crowd.
Mattox said heard a gunshot, but never saw a gun or who fired the shot. In fact, Mattox said he did not realize his little brother had been shot until later.
"I was on the ground," Mattox told KPRC-TV Houston. "After the shooting everybody started running, and I just started running.
Police said Williams was shot in the head. He was rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
"Police wouldn't even let me see him," Mattox said. "I just seen (sic) him laying on the ground, just still."
Mattox said he and his brother do not live at the apartment complex, and were just there to play basketball with friends.
The suspects, ages 13 to 16, fled before police arrived. Authorities said they do not believe the three suspects live at the complex either. There's no motive at this time.
