SAN ANTONIO -

City officials say the intersection of Broadway and Hildebrand will be closed this weekend so construction crews can install utilities across the intersection.

Beginning Friday, Aug. 9 at 9 p.m. through Monday, Aug. 12 at 5 a.m., traffic will be detoured to local streets.

Drivers will be diverted with signage to North New Braunfels before they reach the intersection.

Drivers headed east on Hildebrand are required to turn right onto Broadway, where authorities said they can continue south or follow the signage toward North New Braunfels to head north.

The city says business access will remain available through local streets while the intersection is closed.

The Broadway Corridor Phase IIIA (Broadway-Hildebrand) project will provide a drainage system designed to convey a 100-year storm event across Broadway Street. The city says this will improve driving conditions and safety along Broadway Street and Hildebrand Avenue.

This project also includes reconstruction of Broadway and Hildebrand with curbs, sidewalks, driveway approaches, addition of turn lanes and traffic signal improvements.

SAWS and CPS Energy said they will be replacing and adjusting the water, sewer and gas facilities throughout the project area.

In addition, officials said the project includes the construction of the approved Broadway Street/Hildebrand Avenue underground conversion project, as part of the CPS Energy CIED Program to bury all overhead utility lines at the four corners of the intersection.

All drivers are encouraged to travel at appropriate speeds while using local roads. City officials said electronic message boards are in place to notify motorists of the upcoming closure. Area businesses and residents have also been notified.
