Canyon HS locked down for fight between 2 students
Emergency crews called to school; 1 student airlifted in serious condition
A fight Tuesday morning at Canyon High School between two sophomores has left one of them in “very serious condition” at University Hospital, according to Capt. John McDonald, the spokesman for the New Braunfels Police Department.
The other young man is now in custody.
“Right now, we’re investigating it as an aggravated assault,” McDonald said.
He also said he hopes the investigation will show how the student was so severely injured if no weapons were involved.
He said hands can be classified as personal weapons capable of serious bodily injury.
McDonald said police found the injured young man unconscious in a school hallway, and quickly took him by medical helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio.
Kari Hutchison, Comal ISD deputy superintendent, said the incident occurred about 9:30 a.m. after first period.
“This was an isolated incident involving two young men,” Hutchison said. “The campus is safe.”
Hutchison said there was brief lockdown to allow full access by emergency personnel.
She said there were several witnesses who police said they are questioning.
However, Hutchison said there is no video of the incident because software for the surveillance camera was being updated.
Both McDonald and Hutchison said they could not discuss specifics because of privacy laws.
But McDonald did caution against believing rampant speculation and rumors on social media.
He urged the public to check the New Braunfels police Facebook page for further official updates.
McDonald said he hopes to have new information later this afternoon.
