SAN ANTONIO – The annual Western Heritage Parade and Cattle Drive made its way through downtown San Antonio Saturday to kick off rodeo season.
The crowds cheered as the cattle drive went just as planned and the longhorns trotted down Historic Houston Street, all in a row.
It took a lot of effort to get them there, though. KSAT 12 got a behind-the-scenes view as the 70 longhorns were brought in and rounded up.
Once the parade started, cowboys on horses led the cattle down the street as eight riders from Dallas followed, saddled on big longhorns. Then came the sheep, followed by marching bands.
Several prestigious cavalry divisions followed, like the ones from Texas A&M and Fort Sam Houston. They rode through the parade, showing off antique cannons and wagons from the 1800s.
"They have the gin wagon that was actually produced in the 17th century, in the 1800s, that has been preserved and it's still in working order," said Parade and Cattle Drive Chairman Alex Pena.
It was a sight to see, especially for out-of-towners.
"It's awesome! I really like it!" said Kaleigh, from the Houston area.
She said she's definitely coming back next year.
