SAN ANTONIO -

The Bexar County Medical Examiner has determined a Bexar County jail inmate who died just before he was released passed away from natural causes.

"The probable cause of death was sepsis, due to peritonitis caused by a ruptured appendicitis," said Paul Berry, chief communications officer with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Daniel Puente, 55, died Aug. 28 in the booking area of the jail. He was in custody on a charge of possession of a controlled substance and was in the process of being released from the jail because bond had been posted.

He was taken to a room to change clothes and the detention officer returned a few minutes later and found him unconscious and unresponsive.

A detention officer called for immediate medical attention and paramedics arrived, but were unable to revive Puente and pronounced him dead.
