Changes are coming for drivers on the South Side of San Antonio.

Residents heard about plans for the second phase of construction along VFW Boulevard near Roosevelt Avenue on Thursday night. The work is expected to begin in the next few weeks.

The goal of the $8.5 million project is to alleviate flooding in the area by creating a series of new storm sewers to improve drainage.

The meeting was a chance for residents to hear how the project is going.

"We're going to be channeling the water back to the San Antonio river," said Sergio Chico Rodriguez, Bexar County Commissioner Precinct 1. "We're going to be putting in sidewalks. So people walking to school on sidewalks will be walking on sidewalks and not getting their shoes all wet by the time they get to school. So we are really excited about all these projects."

The first phase of the project is complete. The second phase affects VFW Boulevard between Roosevelt and Padre Drive, and is expected to wrap up in November.
