Goody bags with condoms landed a team of high school cheerleaders in the stands for Friday night's game.

It happened at the high school in Wharton Independent School District.

The district said the varsity team put condoms in the spirit bags meant for the football team before their homecoming game last week.

Officials in the district about 60 miles southwest of Houston weren't amused.

As punishment, the whole team was given a one day in-school suspension and banned from Friday night's game.

In a statement the district said the punishment was to teach students proper behavior and not meant to be overly harsh.

Without the cheerleaders, Wharton lost Friday night.
