City breaks ground on new fire station

Fire Station 53 expected to be operational in January

SAN ANTONIO – Construction began Tuesday on a new fire station in San Antonio.

The city limits were expanded in January 2014 by the limited purpose annexation by about 18,729 acres. The new fire station will provide services to South San Antonio Limited Purpose Annexation Areas 3 and 4.

The new fire station will be located in the 14000 block of Donop Road -- just of Interstate 37 -- on the city's far Southeast Side.

“Today we make history," Councilwoman J. Viagran said. "We begin construction on Fire Station 53 and the future of this new San Antonio area. I’m pleased to be able to deliver such a vital service -- fire services -- to the residents and providing the same level of service as the rest of San Antonio.”

The project, which is managed by Transportation and Capital Improvements for the San Antonio Fire Department, is funded by the fiscal year 2016 tax notes for $963,000.

A fire engine and a brush truck will operate out of the new modular Fire Station 53, which will include two bays, living quarters site work and utilities.

“Any day we can break ground on a new fire station is a great day," Chief Charles Hood said. "The opening of Fire Station 53 will greatly help to serve the citizens of this area and improve on our response times to these additional areas."

Fire Station 53 is expected to be operational in January.
