SAN ANTONIO – City Council voted unanimously to buy more than 200 acres of land on the city’s North Side.
The land, part of the Steubing Ranch, is one of the last large undeveloped tracks of land over the Edwards Aquifer in San Antonio.

The land is in the Stone Oak area, and 165 acres will remain green space, while the remaining 39 acres will be converted into a park and have 6 baseball and soccer fields.
“Our primary goal with this acquisition, in one of the most heavily developed parts of San Antonio, is to help protect our city’s main source of drinking water from contamination,” Mayor Ivy R. Taylor said. “But the other benefits are also important to a fast-growing city like ours: the preservation of green space and the addition of parkland.”
The total cost of the purchase is $10.1 million and comes in two parts.
The 165 acres green space will be paid for using $5.3 million in Prop. 1 money. That money comes from a sales tax used to protect the aquifer. Another $1 million will come from the Hardy Oak extension project.
The remaining money will come from the 2017 bond package.
