City leaders break ground on downtown street project

SAN ANTONIO – City leaders broke ground Tuesday on a construction project that will convert Soledad and Main streets from one-way to two-way roads.

Work will first be done on Soledad Street. It is expected to last eight months.

The conversion is not the only thing drivers will see when the project wraps up.

"We are going to provide on-street parking, wider sidewalks, a bike lane and a lot of landscaping,” Razi Hossenini, assistant director of transportation and capital improvements for the city, said.

Construction on Main Street should begin in June and wrap up in November.

The money was funded by the city’s 2012 bond program.

During construction, drivers can expect alternating road closures from Commerce to Pecan streets.

The project will cost $9.5 million to complete.
