SAN ANTONIO -

The city of San Antonio's Council Public Safety Committee approved a proposed ban Wednesday that would not allow sex offenders near city parks.

The proposed ban states that any sex offender convicted as an adult would not be allowed within 300 feet of a city park. They would also not be able to live within 1,000 feet of a park.

If an offender is currently living within the set distance, they will be grandfathered in.

The proposal currently does not include the area surrounding Haven For Hope or portions of the River Walk, but that could change in the future, officials said.

If a sex offender would like to seek an exemption, they would have to go through the San Antonio Police Department.

The city council could vote on the proposed ban by the end of the year.
