The city of Schertz is getting a big boost to its economy with GE Oil and Gas Incorporated announcing it is expanding its operations.
The move will add 175 new full-time jobs, including engineering and production, and will include an expansion of the facility.
David Gwin, executive director of the Schertz Economic Development Corporation, said this is another sign of growth in Schertz.
"Right off the bat, it means $8 million in new capital investment in the facility and another almost 200 jobs that are highly desirable in a weaker economy," said Gwin. "So we are excited to have both."
GE Oil and Gas is not alone in its investment. Sysco corporation, which is across the street from the GE facility, just completed its 635,000 square-foot regional distribution center. Amazon.com also opened up a 1.3 million square-foot facility in Schertz.
Officials with GE Oil and Gas said they picked Schertz because of its location between San Antonio and Austin, its experienced workforce, its school system and its competitive cost of living.
"We're really excited that they would do this after Amazon.com had done thier investment and then Caterpillar and Sysco," said Gwin. "So we just had a lot of good investment in the community which moves us forward in overall community development."
