City unveils new transportation plan

Official: We could expand from six lanes to 12 lanes

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio city officials announced Wednesday a new transportation plan that extends through the year 2040.

With the city's rapid growth transportation officials said they are doing what they believe is right to handle traffic demands.

Both VIA and the city said in a statement the area is expected to grow by more than 1 million people over the next 20 years, and transportation is vital to that growth.

"Rail has to be a component in moving forward. You can't pour enough concrete to solve the transportation problems of the Interstate 35 corridor," said Tullos Wells, chairman of Lone Star Rail District. "We're now at six lanes. We could expand to 12 lanes, but we run out of room to pour concrete."

VIA said they are aslo exploring bus options and considering adding more buses like high occupancy vehicle or HOV buses, commuter-type buses and other means to transport people from the suburbs into urban areas.
