City's proposed budget shows no cuts in domestic violence programs

Budget to be finalized in September

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio’s proposed 2017 budget shows that domestic violence programs will not be losing any funds.

More than six months ago, the City Council was given a survey about how it would allocate funding for certain nonprofit services.

Some of the results suggested the city could take $1.3 million out of the community safety net programs to put them somewhere else. Those programs deal with things such as domestic violence, child abuse and rape crisis.

There was a lot of debate about that specific funding over the past couple of months. Mayor Ivy Taylor said she’s pleased with the numbers presented during Thursday’s meeting.

“We've maintained our commitment to those agencies, and so I'm happy with what's in the budget right now,” Taylor said. “And I think we certainly have to think proactively into those issues. What are the root causes?”

Taylor also plans to put extra focus on funding workforce programs and youth services, which would tackle the city’s poverty issues.

The City Council’s budget will be finalized in September.
